Zählen oder nicht? countable und uncountable nouns im Betrieb
Bestellst du im Praktikum Nachschub, musst du wissen, ob ein Wort zählbar ist oder nicht – sonst klingt dein Englisch falsch. Manche Nomen, die im Deutschen ganz normal eine Mehrzahl haben, bleiben im Englischen im Singular. Auf dieser Seite lernst du, wie du zählbare und nicht zählbare Nomen unterscheidest und wie du trotzdem eine Menge angibst.
1. Zwei Arten von Nomen: countable und uncountable
Countable nouns (zählbare Nomen) kannst du einzeln zählen: one box, two boxes. Sie haben einen Artikel im Singular (a/an) und ein -s im Plural. Uncountable nouns (nicht zählbare Nomen) kannst du nicht einzeln zählen – sie stehen nur in einer Form, ohne Plural und ohne a/an.

Merke: Frag dich immer: Kann ich das Nomen mit einer Zahl davor sagen (two boxes)? Geht das nicht, ist es uncountable.
2. Die Falle: im Deutschen zählbar, im Englischen nicht
Genau hier liegt die eigentliche Schwierigkeit: Viele Nomen, die du im Betrieb ständig brauchst, sind im Deutschen ganz normal zählbar – im Englischen aber nicht. Sie bekommen kein -s und keinen Artikel a/an.

Merke: Diese Wörter merkst du dir am besten als feste Liste, weil ihr Verhalten von der deutschen Sprachgewohnheit abweicht: kein Plural-s, kein a/an, und das Verb dazu steht im Singular (is).
3. Trotzdem eine Menge angeben: Maßeinheiten
Auch bei einem uncountable noun willst du manchmal eine genaue Menge nennen. Dafür setzt du ein Wort für ein Gefäß, eine Form oder eine Einheit davor.

Merke: Nicht das uncountable noun selbst bekommt eine Zahl, sondern die Einheit davor: nicht two breads, sondern two loaves of bread.
4. how much, how many, much, many und a lot of richtig wählen
Ob du zählbar oder nicht zählbar vor dir hast, entscheidet auch, welches Mengenwort passt. Nur bei nicht zählbaren Nomen steht how much und much, nur bei zählbaren im Plural how many und many. a lot of passt dagegen zu beiden.

Merke: Prüfe zuerst den Nomen-Typ, dann folgt das passende Mengenwort fast automatisch: zählbar → many, nicht zählbar → much, beides → a lot of.
Im Alltag und im Praktikum
Im Betrieb bestellst du Nachschub und musst Vorräte richtig zählen. Soren macht ein Praktikum im Sandpiper Café und geht mit Ms Briarwood die Bestellung für die Küche durch:
How much bread do we still have in the storeroom? We need two loaves for tomorrow. How many bottles of water are left in the fridge, six or seven? We don’t have much sugar, so please order more with the next delivery. I also need a piece of information from the supplier: how many boxes of cups are they sending this week?
So bestellst und zählst du im Praktikum sicher – ohne bei nicht zählbaren Nomen versehentlich einen Plural oder das falsche Mengenwort zu benutzen.
Landeskunde: die Isle of Man
„Hi, I’m Teagan, and I live on the Isle of Man, an island in the sea between Great Britain and Ireland. The island governs itself and has its own parliament, called Tynwald, which is often described as one of the oldest continuous parliaments in the world.
We also have our own language here, Manx, which is related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. A few schools on the island teach it, and you can still see it on road signs next to English.
Every year, the island hosts the Isle of Man TT, a famous motorcycle race on public roads. Another well-known symbol is the Manx cat, a breed of cat that is born without a tail.“

Gut zu wissen: Die Isle of Man liegt in der Irischen See zwischen Großbritannien und Irland und regiert sich mit dem Tynwald weitgehend selbst. Bekannt ist die Insel für die eigene Sprache Manx, für das Motorradrennen Isle of Man TT und für die schwanzlose Manx-Katze.
