how much und how many – zählbar und nicht zählbar
Willst du fragen, wie viele Äpfel jemand hat oder wie viel Wasser noch im Glas ist? Im Englischen brauchst du dafür zwei verschiedene Fragewörter: how many und how much. Welches du nimmst, hängt davon ab, ob das Wort danach zählbar ist oder nicht. Auf dieser Seite lernst du den Unterschied zwischen countable und uncountable nouns und die Wörter, bei denen Deutsch und Englisch nicht übereinstimmen.
1. countable nouns – zählbare Nomen
countable nouns kann man zählen. Sie haben einen Singular und einen Plural: one apple, two apples.
| Singular | Plural | Beispiel |
|---|---|---|
| an apple | apples | I’ve got three apples. |
| an egg | eggs | We need six eggs. |
| a book | books | She has got two books. |
2. uncountable nouns – nicht zählbare Nomen
uncountable nouns kann man nicht einzeln zählen. Sie haben keinen Plural und stehen immer mit einem Verb im Singular (is).
| Nomen | Beispiel | Deutsch |
|---|---|---|
| water, milk, bread, sugar, rice, cheese | Water is important. | Wasser ist wichtig. |
| money | The money is on the table. | Das Geld liegt auf dem Tisch. |
| homework, information | My homework is easy. | Meine Hausaufgabe ist leicht. |
Merke: uncountable nouns bekommen kein -s und stehen immer mit is (nicht are): The information is useful. – nicht The informations are useful.
3. how many + Plural (zählbar)
how many steht vor einem Nomen im Plural, das Verb passt dazu (are).
| Englisch | Deutsch |
|---|---|
| How many apples have you got? | Wie viele Äpfel hast du? |
| How many books are there on the shelf? | Wie viele Bücher sind im Regal? |
| How many students are in your class? | Wie viele Schüler sind in deiner Klasse? |
4. how much + uncountable (nicht zählbar)
how much steht vor einem uncountable noun. Das Verb bleibt im Singular (is).
| Englisch | Deutsch |
|---|---|
| How much water do you need? | Wie viel Wasser brauchst du? |
| How much money have you got? | Wie viel Geld hast du? |
| How much rice is in the bowl? | Wie viel Reis ist in der Schüssel? |
Merke: zählbar → how many + Plural + are. Nicht zählbar → how much + Singular + is.
5. Mengenangaben mit Maßeinheit
Willst du ein uncountable noun trotzdem genauer angeben, benutzt du eine Maßeinheit.
| Maßeinheit | Beispiel | Deutsch |
|---|---|---|
| a glass of | a glass of milk | ein Glas Milch |
| a bottle of | a bottle of water | eine Flasche Wasser |
| a slice of | a slice of bread | eine Scheibe Brot |
| a piece of | a piece of cake | ein Stück Kuchen |
| two kilos of | two kilos of rice | zwei Kilo Reis |
Beispiele im Satz: I’d like a glass of milk, please. – Can I have a slice of bread? – We need two kilos of rice for the recipe.
6. Stolpersteine: money, information, homework, news
Manche Wörter sind im Deutschen zählbar – im Englischen aber nicht. Das sind typische Fehlerquellen.
| Englisch | Deutsch | Besonderheit |
|---|---|---|
| money | Geld | kein Plural: nicht „moneys“ |
| information | Information(en) | kein Plural: nicht „informations“ |
| homework | Hausaufgabe(n) | kein Plural: nicht „homeworks“ |
| news | Nachricht(en) | sieht wie Plural aus, steht aber mit is: The news is good. |
Merke: money, information, homework und news merkst du dir am besten auswendig: Alle vier stehen mit is/was, nicht mit are/were.
7. Landeskunde: Food and drink in Britain
In Britain, people often drink tea with milk. Many families have a cup of tea in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening. Many British families ask their guests a simple question: ‘Tea or coffee?’
Fish and chips is a classic British meal. You get fried fish and chips – the British word for French fries – often with salt and vinegar. You can buy fish and chips at a ‘chippy’, the British word for a fish and chip shop.
At the weekend, many families like a full English breakfast. It usually includes eggs, bacon, sausages, baked beans, tomatoes and toast – a big meal to start the day!
Vokabelhilfe
| Englisch | Deutsch |

| milk | Milch |
| fried | gebraten, frittiert |
| chips | Pommes (britisches Englisch) |

8. Typische Fehler – und wie du sie vermeidest
| Falsch | Richtig | Warum? |

| I need an information. | I need information. | information ist nicht zählbar, kein Artikel a/an, kein Plural. |
